Institute of Gerontology - Body Wise Program

The Body Wise Program, offered by the University of the District of Columbia Institute of Gerontology,  is specifically designed and operated to promote health, wellness and fitness for persons 60 years of age or older in the District of Columbia. Some of the benefits which may be achieved include an increase in participants's cardiovascular efficiency, muscular strength, flexibility and overall life satisfaction, as well as health and preventitive knowledge.

The Body Wise Program consists of water exercise (swimming is not required), stretch and walk, and movement and chair exercise classes. Each of these activities includes a health education component covering topics such as: the safe use of over-the-counter drugs and prescription medication, blood pressure screening and the benefits of exercise for certain physical problems. The program also offers other opportunities for learning and socializing.

Participants in the Body Wise Program must:

1. Be a resident of the District of Columbia

2. Be 60 years of age or older

3. Complete an application form

4. Obtain a a Medical Release Form executed and signed by his/her physician ( to be completed ANNUALLY).

If you would like to join the program, simply complete the application form and have your physician sign the medical release. Applicants must bring their completed application and medical form to the BODYWISE Orientation. Please call (202) 274-6651 to schedule an orientation appointment. Bring proof of D.C residencyand your age. A pass for starting the exercise classes will be issued at this point.
