UDC Defeats Claflin University 57-54 in HBCU Classic
Greenville, S.C.: January 13, 2006—Junior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) scored 22 points to lead the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a 57-54 overtime win over the Claflin University Panthers in the Greenville 2007 HBCU Classic, today, in Greenville, South Carolina. Shaw scored 12 of his 22 points in the first half of the game. UDC raised their record to 9-4 with this win.
Claflin led 27-19 at the break, but UDC came back in the second half to tie the score, and force overtime. Junior guard Charlie Smallwood (Bowie, MD) scored 13 points, followed by junior guard and team captain Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) with 10 points in the victory.
Jerome Starr was the leading scorer for the Panthers with 18 points. Casey Jackson followed with 13 points and Ernest Sinkfield added 11 points.
UDC will be in action again on Tuesday, January 16, at home against the Felician College Golden Falcons in an afternoon game at 2 p.m.
