Pitt-Johnstown Nips UDC for Last Minute, 71-70, Win

Washington, DC: January 20, 2007—A jump shot by senior guard Dwight Hines with 8 seconds remaining in the game gave the  Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats a 71-70 win over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds this afternoon in Washington, DC. With this tough loss, the Firebirds season record is now 10-6.

The closely played game saw the lead change 15 times, and the scored tied 15 times. The Mountain Cats led 29-27 at the half time break on 40 percent (12-30) two-point field goal shooting, and 57 percent (4-7) 3 –point shooting.

The Mountain Cats shot 42 percent (25-60) from the field, made 54 percent of their 3-point shots (7-13), and 68 percent of their free throws (14-21) for the game. The Firebirds made 41 percent (25-61) of their two-point field goals, 24 percent (4-17) of their 3-point shots and 76 percent (16-21) of their free throws.

Quinton Davis paced the Mountain Cats with 15 points and six rebounds, followed by Chris Gilliam with 14 points and six rebounds.

Junior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD) led the Firebirds in scoring with a game high 26 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Junior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) added 15 points and 2 rebounds, while junior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds.

The Firebirds will see their next action on Monday, January 22, when they host the West Chester University Golden Rams at 7 p.m., in the UDC Physical Activities Center.
