UDC Men’s Basketball Inks Three New Players
Washington, DC-- University of the District of Columbia Head Men’s Basketball Coach Julius L. Smith, Jr., has announced the signing of three basketball prospects for the 2008-09 season. Each signed a National Letter of Intent last week, and will join the UDC Firebirds on the court at the start of the winter 2008-09 season.

Washington, DC—Willie Shaw, a standout forward for the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Basketball Team, has been named to the 2007-08 All-ICAA (Independents Collegiate Athletics Association) Division II Men’s Basketball First Team.

Firebirds Close Out Season With 87-58 Win Over Pioneers
Washington, DC: March 2, 2008—The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds ended their 2007-2008 season on a high note this afternoon by defeating the Columbia Union College Pioneers, 87-58, in the Physical Activities Center. UDC Head Men’s Basketball Coach Julius L. Smith, Jr., started five seniors on “Senior Day”, and senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA), playing in his final game for the Firebirds, paced the team to the win with 19 points.

UDC Trumps Cheyney State Second Time this Season, Defeating them 90-78
Washington, DC: February 17, 2008—For the second time this season, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds showed the Cheyney State University Wolves the door, this time defeating them, 90-78, in the Physical Activities Center. Senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) collected his fourth double-double of the season today, scoring 21-points and grabbing 13 rebounds to lead the Firebirds to victory.

Richmond, VA: February 15, 2008—In an excitingly close game, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds defeated the Virginia Union University Panthers, 84-81, tonight in the season re-match at Barco Stevens Hall. Senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) paced the Firebirds to the win with 24 points and 9 rebounds.

Elizabeth City State Tops UDC 90-64
Elizabeth City, NC: February 12, 2008—In a lop- sided game, the Elizabeth City State University Vikings defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 90-64, tonight at the R. L. Vaughn Center. UDC trailed the entire game before finally falling to ECSU by 26 points.

UDC Throttles Columbia Union College 90-56
Takoma Park, MD: February 2, 2008—Senior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) paced the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a 90-56 win over the Columbia Union College Pioneers in a late game tonight at "The Pit”. Four Firebirds scored in double figures to give them the 34-point victory, including Petersen’s game high 23 points, senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) 16 points, senior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) 15, and senior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD) with 10.

UDC Ends Losing Streak With, 81-79, Overtime Defeat of Kutztown University
Washington, DC: January 30, 2008--It took some extra time, but the UDC Firebirds found a way to end their recent frustration. After playing their last three games on the road, the Firebirds were ready to play in front of their home crowd. Led by their backcourt, UDC defeated the Kutztown Bears to end their two game losing streak. Senior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) led the team, scoring 18 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.

UDC Firebirds Fall to Millersville Marauders 68-59
Millersville, PA: January 26, 2008—Seventy-three percent free-throw shooting (22 for 30) made the difference, today, for the Millersville University Marauders as they used it to their advantage to defeat the visiting University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 68-59, at the Pucillo Gymnasium. Reggie Bates paced the Marauders to the win with 24 points.

Mansfield Prevails, 85-82, Over UDC In Overtime
Mansfield, PA: January 23, 2008—Mansfield University was on a mission tonight, determined to win this home basketball game against the visiting University of the District of Columbia Firebirds. However, the Firebirds had a different idea in mind, as they were just as determined to snatch the win away, even while playing without their big man and leading scorer Willie Shaw, who was again suffering from an injury.

UDC Edges Cheyney State 69-66
Cheyney, PA: January 20, 2008—After tying the score at 66, with 55 seconds remaining in the game, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds went on to defeat the Cheyney State University Wolves, 69-66, on a steal and free-throw by senior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD). Cheyney knotted the score at 66 on a 3-point shot by Robbie Simpson, but Smallwood was fouled by Tyrone Smith with 15 seconds remaining, and shot two free-throws to make the score 68-66. Tyrone Smith then had the ball stolen from him by Smallwood, whom he promptly fouled, which enabled him to shoot the winning point on one of two free-throws.

Devils Rally in Second Half to Defeat Firebirds,55-54
Philadelphia, PA-January 10, 2008--Keith Dundas scored a career-high 27 points as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball team rallied from a nine-point second half deficit to defeat the University of the District of Columbia 55-54 Thursday night at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia.

Firebirds Return Favor, Defeat Battlers 67-65
Philippi, WVA: January 5, 2008—If revenge were on the minds of the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds against the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers basketball team tonight, they certainly exacted it by defeating them, 67-65, in Philippi, West Virginia. In December, the Battlers handed the Firebirds an 80-77 defeat in Washington for their second loss of the season. But revenge is sweet, and the Firebirds got it tonight.

Extra Time Needed
Washington, DC: January 3, 2008-- What a way to start the New Year!!! The UDC Firebirds provided a whole lot of excitement while earning their first win of 2008. They defeated the Millersville Marauders, 86-83 in triple overtime. The Firebirds were led by junior forward Willie Shaw. He played 35 minutes and had 27 points and 8 rebounds, before fouling out with 4:15 left in the third overtime. His inside presence was countered by the play of guards Charlie Smallwood and Frank Petersen. They added 16 and 13 points respectively.

Senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) paced the Firebirds to the win with 22 points and 9 rebounds.

Washington, DC:December 21, 2007-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebird Basketball Team defeated the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Devils, 55-36,tonight in the second game of the UDC Christmas Classic at the Physical Activities Center. Senior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) paced the Firebirds with 16 points and 2 rebounds, followed by senior guard Frank Petersen ( Silver Springs, MD) with 14 points and 6 rebounds.

Washington, DC: December 18, 2007-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds will host a Christmas Basketball Classic Friday and Saturday, December 21-22 in the Physical Activities Center. Joining the Firebirds in the Classic will be the Columbia Union College Pioneers (MD), Saint Leo University Lions (FL) and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Devils (PA).

Despite Hot Shooting, UDC Loses to Alderson-Broaddus, 80-77
There was excitement in the air. The UDC Firebirds returned home for the first time since November 24th. They won their last game against Wilberforce. Their record was a nice 4-1. However, even with the home crowd, the Firebirds lost to the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers, 80-77.

Firebirds Down Bulldogs, 70-63, Justin Walker Named to All-Tournament Team
East Stroudsburg, PA: December 8, 2007—Senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) recovered from an off-day performance on Friday, where he scored only 9 points against Queens College, to lead the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a 70-63 win over the Wilberforce University Bulldogs today, in the consolation game of the East Stroudsburg Tournament. Shaw scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double – double of the season.

UDC Stunned in East Stroudsburg Tournament, Lose to Queens 75-77
East Stroudsburg, PA: December 7, 2007—Inactive since November 24, the UDC Firebirds Basketball Team found themselves a little rusty and lacking on defense this afternoon in the East Stroudsburg University Basketball Tournament in Pennsylvania, as they lost to Queens College 75-77. Prior to this win, Queens had not won a game all season and are now 1-5.

This was the second win of the new season for the Firebirds. Senior Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) paced the Firebirds to the win with 16 points.

Washington, DC: November 16, 2007—The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds opened the 2007 season in strong fashion tonight by soundly defeating the Chestnut Hill Griffins, 90-43, at home in Washington, D.C. Senior Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) paced the Firebirds with 18 points on 7-10 field goal shooting, and 4-7 from the charity stripe. Shaw also grabbed 9 rebounds, gave 2 assists and had 4 blocks in the win.

Fordham Hands UDC 64-54 Pre-season Defeat
Bronx, NY: November 3, 2007—The Fordham University Rams handed the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds a, 64-54, defeat this afternoon in a pre-season exhibition game in the Bronx, New York. Playing with a sickened Willie Shaw, and other key players who were injured in an automobile accident on Wednesday night following their game at George Washington, the Firebirds were unable to use their patented offense to offset the Rams’ scoring power.

GWU Escapes UDC with 74-71 OT Win
Washington, DC: October 31, 2007—In an exciting pre-season basketball game, the George Washington University Colonials narrowly escaped a major upset tonight when they defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 74-71, in overtime at the Charles E. Smith Center. The Firebirds led most of the game and were forced into overtime when GWU’s Wynton Witherspoon was fouled by UDC’s Antwon Hawkins with 12 seconds remaining, and hit the back end of two free throws to tie the score at 64 to end regulation time.

UDC to Play GWU October 31, 2007
The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds will play the George Washington University Colonials in a pre-season exhibition game on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at 7:30 p.m., at the GWU Charles E. Smith Center. This will be the first, ever, meeting of the two neighboring schools and quite a challenge for the NCAA Division II Firebirds.

Timothy Ellison Signs with UDC
Washington, DC—Edison High School (Springfield, VA) standout Timothy W. Ellison has signed a national letter- of -intent to play basketball for the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds this coming season. Ellison is a 6’5” swing man who can play several positions, including shooting guard, point guard and small forward. He received Edison’s Most Valuable Player Award following the 2006-07 season during which they compiled a record of 18-3, to win their first regular season district championship since 1970. Ellison scored 20 points in Edison’s win over Wakefield High to give them the 2007 National District Championship.
