UDC wins 65-60 over Elizabeth City
Washington, DC: November 24, 2007— The UDC Firebirds defeated the Elizabeth City State University Vikings, 65-60, this afternoon in Washington, D.C. Senior guard Justin Walker (Teaneck, NJ) came off the bench to pace the Firebirds to the win with 16 points and 8 rebounds.
Senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria,
VA) tallied a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds. Antwon
Hawkins, a senior guard from Mitchellville, Maryland, recorded his
first double-double of the season, posting 10 points and collecting
10 rebounds.
The low scoring game saw the Firebirds shoot only 35 percent
(23-66) in field goals, while ECSU did a little better hitting 37
percent (22-60). The Firebirds got off to a fast start and took a
33-21 lead into the break.
The Vikings chipped at the lead after getting it down to 10 at the 10:08 mark of the second half and then made the game interesting as they continued to reduce the lead, and knotting it at 52 with 2:23 remaining. Elizabeth City finally gained the lead with 41 seconds remaining on a jumper by Matt Nowlin.
UDC regained the lead with 25 seconds
remaining on a tip-in by Walker and went on to win the game.
Olajuwon Johnson led the Viking shooting with 15 points. Anthony
Hilliard added a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
UDC, 3-0 for the season, will return to action December 7, in the
East Stroudsburg Tournament in East Stroudsburg,
Pennsylvania.
