MEN’S BASKETBALL LOSES TOUGH ONE IN SEASON FINALE, 86-84, TO CENTRAL STATE : COACH RULAND GIVES POST SEASON REVIEW
The UDC Firebirds Men’s basketball team finished the season with 11 victories in their last 18 games, a very nice touch to the 2010-11 season. However, Jeff Ruland and the guys would have loved to have made it a sweeter finish, losing on the road to Central State (O.), 86-84, when a last second shot by Keith Brooks missed the mark and sent the Firebirds home for the year. A year that started with a 0-8 skid ended with impressive regional victories, Division II respect and great promise for 2011-12.

Senior night a success for Firebirds!
Washington, DC: February 22, 2011 – The UDC men’s basketball team (11-14) closed out the home portion of their season tonight with an 88-81 win over the Fairmont Sate University Fighting Falcons (15-9).
The win gave UDC an 8-4 record at home this season, which is a seven win improvement over last season. The Firebirds have now won 10 of their last 14 games overall, including seven in a row at the UDC sports complex

Men’s Basketball Senior Tim Ellison to be Honored Tonight
The UDC Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will give special recognition to Tim Ellison (T.V. Production-Alexandria, VA) during Senior Night activities tonight during the UDC-Fairmont University men’s basketball game. Ellison, who has been an important member of the men’s team for the past three and a half years, will be playing in his final home basketball game for the Firebirds at 7pm tonight.

Philippi,WV: February 19, 2011-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team (10-14) came from behind to defeat the Alderson-Broaddus College Battlers (16-10) , 69-56, this afternoon in Philippi, West Virginia. Junior guard Brandon Herbert (Sociology- Baltimore, MD) led the Firebirds to the win for the 6th time this season, with a 17 point, 6 rebound, 1 assist and 1 steal performance.

Adventist used a balanced scoring attack and rebounding to secure the win.

UDC shoots past Livingstone, 81-70
Washington, DC: February 10, 2011 – The UDC men’s basketball team (8-13) moved to two games over .500 when playing at home this season, after picking up an 81-70 win over the Livingstone College Blue Bears (12-7) tonight at the UDC sports complex.
The crowd of 150 people in attendance got to see an impressive shooting performance from the Firebirds, who were playing against the nation’s number one three-point field goal percentage defense. The Blue Bears entered the week allowing teams to make just 25.1% of their long distance attempts, but the Firebirds shattered that mark tonight as they went 9 of 22 (40.9%) from three-point range for the game

The Pfeiffer University Falcons visit the UDC Firebirds Men for a re-match this Saturday, January 29, at 3 p.m. The Firebirds (5-12) defeated the Falcons (7-9), 94-90, on January 12, in Meisenheimer, North Carolina. Since that time, they have won three of their last four games, led by one of the highest scoring backcourt combinations among Division II schools, junior guard Nigel Munson (Graphic Design-Washington, DC and junior guard Brandon Herbert (Sociology-Baltimore, MD). Pfeiffer has lost five of its last six games.

Firebirds Sweep Pfeiffer Season Series with 97-96 Win
Washington, DC: January 29, 2011--Junior guard Nigel Munson (Graphic Design-Washington, DC) converted four free-throws within the final 9 seconds of the game between the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team and the Pfeiffer University Falcons. The free throws lifted the Firebirds to a 97-96 win today at the UDC Sports Complex in Washington, DC. It was the second Firebirds win over the Falcons during this season. The win improved the Firebirds record to 6-12, while dropping the Falcons record to 7-10.

The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men’s Basketball Team (4-11) looks to extend their two-game win streak to three when they play the Bloomfield College Deacons (9-5) on Saturday, January 22, at the UDC Sports Complex. The Firebirds scored 110 points against the Central State University Marauders last Saturday, defeating them by ten points for their largest win margin in years.

Firebirds extend win streak to three with 109-106 victory over Bloomfield
Washington, DC: January 22, 2011 – For the second game in a row the UDC men’s basketball team (5-11) surpassed the 100-point mark, outscoring the Bloomfield College Deacons (9-6) 109-106 for their fifth victory in the last eight games.
The Firebirds have now scored 313 points combined in their last three games (all wins), and have now evened up their home record to 4-4. The win against Bloomfield snapped a three-game losing streak to the Deacons that dated back to the ’08-’09 season.

Firebirds victorious in second straight game, 110-100 over Central State
Washington, DC: January 15, 2011 – The UDC men’s basketball team (4-11) surpassed the 100-point mark for the first time this season in route to a 110-100 victory over the Central State University Marauders (9-7).
It was the first meeting between the two schools this season, and the fourth since 2008. The Marauders had won the last three games between the two schools, and held a two-point advantage at the half. But, UDC outscored Central State 67-55 in the second half to build its first multi-game win streak in almost two years

Washington, DC: December 30, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team fell just short of a win this afternoon, losing to the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers, 80-77, in an exciting contest at the UDC Sports Complex in Washington, DC. Cheyney, PA: December 11, 2010-- With 23 seconds remaining in the game, University of the District of Columbia Firebirds freshman guard Philip Izevbehai (Mass Media- Long Island, NY) scored on a jump shot was fouled and converted the free- throw to tie the score against the Cheyney University Wolves at 61. But it would not be enough as Cheyney guard Sharif Bray took possession of the ball on an inbound pass and fired off a jump shot with 3 seconds remaining to lift the Wolves to a 63-61 win over the Firebirds this afternoon in Cheyney, Pennsylvania. With this loss, the Firebirds fell to 0-8 for the season, while Cheyney improved to 5-1.

Washington, DC: November 29, 2010 – Junior guard Brandon Herbert (Sociology – Baltimore, MD) led the Firebirds (0-6) in scoring for the fourth straight game, and he scored at least 20-points for the third time in four games, but his scoring was not enough as the UDC men’s basketball team fell to the Clarion University Golden Eagles (3-0), by a score of 83 – 70.

UDC's Brandon Herbert's Game -High 26 Point Performance Not Enough to Overcome Tampa
Tampa, Fl: November 23, 2010-- Brandon Herbert (Sociology-Baltimore, MD) scored a game-high 26 points for the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team against the University of Tampa, tonight, but it was not enough to bring the win home, as they fell to the Spartans, 82-60, at the Bob Martinez Sports Center in Tampa, Florida. After getting off to a quick 4-point lead early in the game, the Firebirds cooled off and could not overcome Tampa's 41 to 24 rebound advantage, and 89 percent (16-18) free-throw shooting that lifted them to the win.

Homecoming not enough to propel UDC past Mansfield, lose 82-68
Washington, DC: November 20, 2010 – In a back-and-forth game the UDC Firebirds (0-4) came up on the short-end of an 82-68 loss to the Mansfield University Mountaineers (3-0) on homecoming weekend 2010.
Leading the way for the Firebirds in the loss were junior guard David Sanders (Information Technology – Upper Marlboro, MD), and junior guard Brandon Herbert (Sociology – Baltimore, MD), each with 16 points. Also in double figures were freshman forward Ziad Ashmawy (Political Science – Cairo, Egypt) with 13 points, and senior guard Tim Ellison (Mass Media – Alexandria, VA) with 10 points.

Firebirds Fall to Villanova
Philadelphia, PA: November 2, 2010-- Senior guard Tim Ellison (T.V. Broadcasting-Alexandria, VA) scored a game-high 25 points for the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds tonight as they played the NCAA Division I Villanova Wildcats, for the first time ever, in an exhibition game at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is also the first time that the Firebirds have played aI top tenDI basketball team. Ellison was the only UDC player to reach double figures in the game.

University of the District of Columbia 2010-11 Men's Basketball Schedule Announced
Washington, DC: October 5, 2010The University of the District of Columbia, today, announced their 2010-11 mens basketball schedule. The Firebirds will tune-up for the season in an exhibition game against Division I powerhouse Villanova University on November 2, at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They will play a 26 game regular season schedule that begins November 12, with a home game against St. Augustines College, at the UDC Sports Complex.
