2011 Men's Tennis Season Preview

Washington, DC – The Firebirds Men's Tennis team looks to build off an impressive 2010-2011 campaign heading in to the 2011-2012 season.  The Firebirds will participate in 6 fall dates and 13 spring contests.  4 of the 6 fall dates take place at home at the UDC Tennis Facility.  The season begins on Friday, September 9th at home against East Coast Conference foe NYIT.

Other events of note include the USTA/ITA East Regional Championships on September 17 – 19 in Philadelphia, PA, as well as the Georgetown Classic on September 23 – 25 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

UDC Head Men's Tennis Coach T. Richard Mahaffey, III, is looking to a core of returners to lead the team in the 2011-2012 campaign and build off the momentum of last year's 2nd place finish in the East Coast Conference (ECC).   Juniors Tomas Gajdusek (Finance- Prague, Czech Republic) and Bruno Reich (Business Management - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) both garnered ECC All-Conference First Team honors in 2010 – 2011.  Gajdusek was named 2010 – 2011 ECC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Sophomore, Miguel Uzcatequi (Electrical Engineering -Valencia, Venezuela) won the ECC Men's Tennis Rookie of the Year Award.  Uzcatequi and fellow sophomore, Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering -Valencia, Venezuela), both were selected to the ECC Second Team.

Top newcomers for the Firebirds include sophomore transfer Aleksandar Grabovac (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and freshmen Simon Anderson (Ystad, Sweden).  Coach Mahaffey hopes this combination of youth and experience will position the Firebirds as legitimate contenders for the ECC Championship.

Coach Mahaffey was named the East Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2010 – 2011 after compiling a 13 - 5 record (4-2 in the ECC) and a second place finish in the conference.

Coach Mahaffey is optimistic about this year's team saying, "We expect to be exceptionally competitive in the East Coast Conference, and our goal is to ultimately win the ECC Championship.  We have an exceptional core of returners with Tomas, Bruno, Miguel, and Carlos, and we expect these young men to lead us throughout the season."
