WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team looks to make a return trip to the East Coast Conference Tournament Finals, as the No. 2 seeded Firebirds take on No. 3 seed NYIT in semifinal action on Tuesday, April 17th at 2:00 p.m.
Reigning ECC Coach of the Year Dickie Mahaffey has guided District of Columbia to a 15-3 overall record and 3-1 mark in the conference. The Firebirds are ranked No. 3 in the East Region.
UDC has been successful this year in large part due to its dominance in doubles play. The Firebirds swept all three doubles matches 11 times this season. As a team, they are 42-12 on the season, led by their No. 1 duo of Aleksandar Grabovac and Simon Andersson (14-4). In singles play, the team is a combined 88-20, led by 16 wins apiece by Andersson (No. 5) and Bruno Reich (No. 3).
Although District of Columbia had tremendous success in doubles play this season, its upcoming semifinal opponent, NYIT, managed to claim two doubles victories over UDC the last time these two met on April 7th. The Bears jumped out to a 2-1 lead before the host Firebirds came storming back to win all six singles matches and earn a 7-2 victory.
NYIT comes into the match with a record of 11-10 and a league mark of 2-2. The Bears had won five of their last six matches before ending the season with a 9-0 loss at home to Queens.
In other semifinal action, top-seeded host Queens College will take on No. 4 Dowling at 12:00 p.m. The winner will play either UDC or NYIT in the finals on Thursday, April 19th.
