Washington, DC - The University of the District of Columbia is set to begin its 2011 Men's Cross-Country season on September 10th, at the Delaware State University Invitational in Smyrna, DE. The Firebirds will compete in five meets this season in addition to the East Coast Conference Championships in October in Brookeville, NY. The UDC Athletic Department joined the East Coast Conference (ECC) on July 1, 2011. This will be the team's initial year of competition as a member of the ECC and they are excited about their conference prospects for the season.
The cross country team will be led by All-American, sophomore Hillary Mugun (Nandi Hills, Kenya). Mugun won five consecutive cross-country races during the 2010 season and Head Men Cross-Country Coach Alton McKenzie expects him to have an exceptional season again this year. "The fact that we are now in a conference gives him the chance to compete for a championship. He is a standout athlete and will have the opportunity to compete for an individual conference championship, which has not been a reality for him before," said Coach McKenzie.
Four runners, including Mugun, return for the Firebirds in the 2011 season. Other returners in addition to Mugun, include senior Justin Chemallan (Nandi Hills, Kenya), junior Zephaniah Koech (Nandi Hills, Kenya), and senior Linus Kosgei (Kapsabet, Kenya). Added Coach McKenzie, "We are looking forward to building off last year and having them continue their development into their second season. We are thrilled to be in the East Coast Conference and it gives us another opportunity to measure ourselves other than just regionally."
