Lady Firebirds Defeat Lady Wolves 65-62
Washington, DC: November 21, 2006—It was a close an exciting basketball contest tonight as the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds captured their first win of the season, defeating the Cheyney University Lady Wolves 65-62. UDC shot 40 percent from the field, 29 percent from three-point range, and 65 percent from the charity line in route to their first season win.
UDC led 33-25 at the break, but Cheyney out scored them in the second half 37-32. Both team benches scored 18 points, but free throwing and a higher percentage of field goals made enabled the Lady Firebirds to put the game in their win column.
Senior forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ) paced the Lady Firebirds
with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 7-10 free throw shooting. Ashley
Alexander (Washington, DC), a junior guard, added 11 points, 6
rebounds and 3 assists. Junior guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY)
added 11 points and 3 rebounds to the winning effort.
Ashley Blake was the Cheyney high scorer, dropping in 20 points while grabbing 3 rebounds and giving 1 assist. Danielle Jones followed with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
UDC, now 1-2 for the season, will see their next action on Tuesday, November 28, against Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, at 6 p.m.
