Lady Firebirds Drop Lady Wolves 85-77

Washington, DC: November 20, 2007--Robin Williams , a junior guard from the Bronx, New York, led the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds to a, 85-77, win over the visiting Lady Wolves of Cheyney State University tonight. Williams tallied 19 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the game.

The game was fraught with mis-steps as the two teams totaled a combined 82 turnovers, after having a delayed start due to the late arrival of the Cheyney State team, which was caught up in a massive traffic jam caused by a serious accident on the way to Washington. After the game finally got underway, the visitors made a 9-0 run for an early lead before UDC was able to get on the board when Robin Williams hit a three pointer at 16:24 into the game.  However, it appeared as though the Lady Firebirds let their guard down a little and the Lady Wolves took full advantage of it.

UDC knotted the score at 15 on a free throw by sophomore Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD), at the 9:52 mark. That would be the only tie during the game as the Lady Firebirds took command and led the rest of the way. Freshman Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ) hit a three-pointer at the 9:27 mark on an assist from Ashley Alexander, to give the Lady Firebirds a 18-15 lead that they never relinquished.

The Lady Firebirds took a 37-30 lead into the break on 50 percent field goal shooting (12-24), 80 percent (4-5) 3- point shooting, and 60 percent (9-15) free throw shooting. UDC shot 49 percent for the game (26-53).

Cheyney made a run in the last four minutes of the game, but could not overcome the hotter shooting Lady Firebirds.

Freshman Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) added her first career double-double of 12 points, and 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals to the win, while senior Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) added 9 points, 7 rebounds and 1 steal after getting in early foul trouble and spending some early minutes on the bench. Juinior Jessica Edwards (Chicago, IL) also added 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals for the victory.

Danielle Jones was the game high scorer as she tallied 20 points for the Lady Wolves, while Angel Henderson and Stephanie Orji added 9 points apiece.

UDC will see their next action on Monday, November 26, at home against NYACK College.
