Elizabeth City, NC: January 10, 2008—On December 3, 2007, the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings left their calling card with the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds with the message of a 55-52 defeat on the UDC home court. Tonight was payback time, as the Lady Firebirds returned the favor with a 55-51 win over the Lady Vikings on their home court.
Junior guard Devaughn Hailey (Camden, NJ) led UDC to the win, scoring 12 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, and dishing out 4 assists. Tiffany Church, a junior guard from Norfolk, Virginia, followed with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals. Junior forward Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ) contributed 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals to round out the top scoring for the Lady Firebirds.
Elizabeth City started the game with a 7-0 run before UDC’s Tiffany Church got the Lady Firebirds on the board with a lay-up at the 15:29 mark. UDC knotted the score at 16 at 6:32, then took the lead 21-20 at 2:14 on a lay-up by freshman forward Catrise Cannady (Washington, DC), and took a 28-20 lead into the break on 30% (10-33) field goal shooting, 50% (3 for 6) 3-point shooting and 83% (5 for 6) shooting at the charity stripe.
The Lady Vikings regained the lead 39-38 with 11:12 remaining on a jumper by Joyce Freeman, but Devaughn Hailey made a 3- pointer at 10:18 with an assist from freshman center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC). McGill is currently ranked 46th in the country among NCAA Division II schools in rebounding, averaging 9.1 per game.
Elizabeth City tied the score at 41 with 8:10 remaining before the lead changed once more when UDC took the lead for good at the 1:22 mark on a lay-up by Deyshia Williams, and went on to win the game by the score of 55-51. UDC took advantage of the disparity in turnovers by scoring 28 points off 19 Elizabeth City turnovers. UDC’s bench outscored the home bench by 20-7.
UDC won the game on only 33% field goal shooting (18 for 55), 42% 3-point shooting (5 for 12), and 64% free throw shooting (14 for 22). With this win, UDC improves its record to 10-4.
Celeste Trahan led the Lady Viking scoring with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Joyce Freeman added 19 points and 5 rebounds.
