Lady Firebirds Extend Win Streak with, 47-38, Defeat of Chowan Lady Hawks

Murfreesboro, NC: January 19, 2008—With a 47-38 win over the Lady Hawks of Chowan College, today, at the Helms Center, the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds extended their win streak to four, and improved their season record to 11-4. Freshman forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, S.C.) paced UDC to the win with a 13-point, 3 rebound performance.

Twenty-eight turnovers helped sink the Lady Hawks, as UDC capitalized by getting 16 points from the errors. Chowan opened the game with an 8-2 run and extended their lead to 14 before junior forward Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ) hit a jump shot at the 1:55 mark of the half to give UDC a 15-14 lead. The low scoring game saw the half end with the score knotted at 16.

The Lady Firebirds opened the second half with a jump shot by Lillian McGill to take the lead and didn’t look back as they began to pull away from the Lady Hawks to lead by as many as 16 points and then win by 9.

UDC won the game on 33% (16 for 48) field goal shooting, 20% 3-point (3 for 15) and 60%  (12 for 20) free throw shooting. 

McGill was the only UDC player to reach double figures, with sophomore guard Tiffany Church (Norfolk,VA) adding 9 points; guards Eniola Bakare, a senior from Staten Island, NY, and senior  Ashley Alexander (Washington,DC) scoring 8 points apiece, and Deyshia Williams contributing 7 points. The leading scorers for Chowan were Brittany Nicholson with 25 points, and Keyon Sellers with 10 points. Chowan dropped to 5-13 for the season with this loss.

UDC will see action again on January 21, at home, against Edinboro University.
