Butler, Jr.,head coach of the women's basketball team, has been named 2009 National Coach of the Year for Division II (Women). Butler was chosen through a nationwide fan poll conducted by the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HRSN). Results were released this week.

It was the second consecutive win for the Firebirds in the Tournament, after defeating Flagler College on Thursday night.

    Women’s National Independent Basketball Tournament The UDC Women’s Basketball Team will travel to St. Augustine, Florida this weekend to participate in the 2009 Women’s National Independent Schools Basketball Tournament. The Tournament , scheduled for March 5-8, 2009, will feature non-conference schools competing for the Independent Schools Championship. UDC won the 2008 Championship and is looking to repeat this year.     Women's Basketball Seniors Honored The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored four members of its Firebird Women’s Basketball Team who are seniors and played in their final home basketball game last Saturday, during Senior Day ceremonies. LaQuanda Brandon, Jessica Edwards, DeVaughn Hailey, and Deyshia Williams played in their final home game, helping to defeat the University of the Sciences-Philadelphia, 61-51. UDC Athletics Director Patricia Thomas and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lester L. Butler, Jr., presented each senior their framed uniform and teammates gave them other gifts. “We thank these young ladies for their outstanding contribution to the Women’s Basketball Team, in particular, and the advancement of the UDC Intercollegiate Athletics Program in general”, said Athletics Director Thomas.

    UDC Defeats Fayetteville State, 71-69, in Overtime Washington, DC: December 14, 2008—It was the first meeting of the Fayetteville State University (FSU) Broncos and University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Firebirds Women’s basketball teams in many years, and they promptly made up for it as they took it to the max this afternoon in the Physical Activities Center. With the score knotted at 62, the teams went into overtime to settle the matter, and UDC pulled out the 71-69, win in the closing minute.

Washington, MD), the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Team could not sustain offensive consistency and lost to the Glenville State College Pioneers, 60-55, today, in Glenville, West Virginia. Three Glenville players were in double figures led by senior guard Mallory Menendez with 19 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Suzi Harvey and senior guard Christine DiSabato scored 13 points apiece to round out the scoring leadership for the Pioneers.

UDC jumped on Davis & Elkins at the start of the first period and didn’t look back, at one point opening up as much as a 21 point lead . It was Davis & Elkins’ second loss to the Firebirds this season, having fallen to them earlier during the UDC Classic in November.

Since 1988, Food & Friends, an organization based in the District of Columbia, has been providing counseling, packages, meals, and groceries to residents around the Washington metro area living with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses. These services offer relief for those infected and their families, making a nutritional, balanced lifestyle available, giving them peace of mind.
