UDC Women's Basketball Coach Named HRSN D II Coach of the Year
Washington, D.C. - The University of the District of Columbia is proud to announce that Lester L. Butler, Jr.,head coach of the women's basketball team, has been named 2009 National Coach of the Year for Division II (Women). Butler was chosen through a nationwide fan poll conducted by the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HRSN). Results were released this week.

St. Augustine, FL: March 6, 2009—The 20th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team concluded their 2009 appearance in the Independent Women’s Basketball Tournament with a, 71-61, defeat of the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon, tonight, in St. Augustine, Florida at the Flagler College Gymnasium. It was the second consecutive win for the Firebirds in the Tournament, after defeating Flagler College on Thursday night.

St. Augustine, Fl: March 5, 2009—Sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) recorded her 12th double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in leading the 20th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team to a, 73-58, win over the Flagler College Saints in the first round of the National Independent Schools Basketball Tournament in St. Augustine, Florida tonight. UDC, ranked 8th in the NCAA Atlantic Region, will play the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon in the next round on, Friday, March 6.

Women’s National Independent Basketball Tournament
The UDC Women’s Basketball Team will travel to St. Augustine, Florida this weekend to participate in the 2009 Women’s National Independent Schools Basketball Tournament. The Tournament , scheduled for March 5-8, 2009, will feature non-conference schools competing for the Independent Schools Championship. UDC won the 2008 Championship and is looking to repeat this year. LaQuanda Brandon’s Season-High 23 Points Leads UDC to, 74-71, Win Over Shaw
Raleigh, NC : February 19, 2009—Senior guard LaQuanda Brandon (Washington, DC) scored a season-high 23 points to lead the number 23 ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team to a, 74-71, win over the Shaw University Bears tonight at the Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina. Brandon also collected four rebounds and dished out two assists in the winning effort.

Women's Basketball Seniors Honored
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored four members of its Firebird Women’s Basketball Team who are seniors and played in their final home basketball game last Saturday, during Senior Day ceremonies. LaQuanda Brandon, Jessica Edwards, DeVaughn Hailey, and Deyshia Williams played in their final home game, helping to defeat the University of the Sciences-Philadelphia, 61-51. UDC Athletics Director Patricia Thomas and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Lester L. Butler, Jr., presented each senior their framed uniform and teammates gave them other gifts. “We thank these young ladies for their outstanding contribution to the Women’s Basketball Team, in particular, and the advancement of the UDC Intercollegiate Athletics Program in general”, said Athletics Director Thomas.

Takoma Park, MD: February 16, 2009—Senior guard LaQuanda Brandon (Washington, DC) led the 18th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team to a, 40-65, trouncing of the Columbia Union College Pioneers tonight in Takoma Park, Maryland, at the Pit. Brandon scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds in pacing the team to the win.

Washington, DC: February 14, 2009—In her final home game appearance, senior guard LaQuanda Brandon paced the 18th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a, 61-51, defeat of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Devils at the Physical Activities Center in Washington, DC, this afternoon. Brandon scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and made one assist as she brought her collegiate playing career to an end.

Nyack, NY : February 10, 2009—The Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team fought hard tonight in their game against the Nyack College Warriors, but lost, 49-46, in Nyack, New York. Neither team shot well, with both under 30% from the field, but Nyack pulled off the upset win on 28% (14-50) shooting.

UDC Women’s Win Streak Ends as They Fall to Chowan, 70-52
Murfreesboro, NC: February 9, 2009--The Chowan University Hawks defeated the No. 16 University of the District of Columbia Firebird Women's Basketball team, 70-52, this afternoon, snapping their 13 game win streak and giving them only their third loss of the season. The Firebirds seemed out of sorts as they shot a season low 32% (17-54) for the game.

Cheyney,PA: February 2, 2009—With nine seconds remaining in the game, senior guard DeVaughn Hailey (Camden, NJ) hit a jump shot to lift the No. 18th ranked University of the District of Columbia Women’s Basketball Team to a, 57-56, win over the Cheyney University Wolves tonight at Cope Hall in Cheyney, Pennsylvania, and their 12th win in a row. Hailey scored 9 points, grabbed one rebound, and made three assists in the very close game, in which sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) led with 13 points, and eight rebounds.

Washington, DC :January 31, 2009—With win number 17 in the book, the 18th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team added another game to its win streak tonight, making it 11 in a row, and giving them a 17-2 season record. UDC defeated Columbia Union College, 83-48, in the Physical Activities Center, as the No. 1 ranked HBCU Division II school looked to enhance its position in the Atlantic Region.

Washington, DC: January 29,2009—The 18th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team extended their win streak to ten games, and their season record to 16-2 tonight, as they defeated the Bloomfield College Deacons, 58-46, in the Physical Activities Center. Sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) paced the Firebirds to the win with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds (her 9th of the season).

Washington, DC—Lester L. Butler, Jr., Head Women’s Basketball Coach at the University of the District of Columbia is the Women’s Division II Bulletin Coach of the Month for January 2009. The citation was made in recognition of his having led the Firebirds to a 6-0 mark during the month to push the team’s record to 15-2 and a No. 18 ranking. Wins came against such regional foes as Mansfield, Mercy and Bowie State.

Bowie, MD: January 13, 2009—In a very close contest, the # 23 nationally ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team rallied to defeat the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs,55-52, tonight at the A.C. Jordan Arena. Senior guard Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ) paced the Firebirds to the win with a 15- point, 5 rebounds performance. Joining Williams in double figures for UDC was senior guard DeVaughn Hailey (Camden. NJ) with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists. Sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) and freshman guard Stacy Griffith (Fredericksburg, VA) scored 8-points apiece in the win.

UDC also defeated Mercy College, 73-67, on Saturday in the first game of the Classic.

UDC Defeats Fayetteville State, 71-69, in Overtime
Washington, DC: December 14, 2008—It was the first meeting of the Fayetteville State University (FSU) Broncos and University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Firebirds Women’s basketball teams in many years, and they promptly made up for it as they took it to the max this afternoon in the Physical Activities Center. With the score knotted at 62, the teams went into overtime to settle the matter, and UDC pulled out the 71-69, win in the closing minute.

UDC Women Defeat Bowie State, 64-53
Washington, DC: December 10, 2008—The University of the District of Columbia’s Firebirds Women’s Basketball team took charge of their game against across town rival Bowie State University in the opening minutes tonight at the Physical Activities Center, pulling out to a 17 point lead and increasing it to 21 before going into the half time break. Junior point guard Nicole Cooper ( Ft. Washington, MD) paced UDC in the half, going 3 for 3 from beyond the arc, scoring 11 points, then added 5- second half points to lead the team to a, 64-53, win.

UDC Women Fall to Glenville State, 60-55
Glenville, WV: December 7, 2008—Without their injured playmaker, Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD), the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Team could not sustain offensive consistency and lost to the Glenville State College Pioneers, 60-55, today, in Glenville, West Virginia. Three Glenville players were in double figures led by senior guard Mallory Menendez with 19 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Suzi Harvey and senior guard Christine DiSabato scored 13 points apiece to round out the scoring leadership for the Pioneers.

UDC Women Hand Davis & Elkins Second Defeat of Season , 88-51
Elkins, WV: December 6, 2008—The University of the District of Columbia Firebird Women’s Basketball Team extended their win streak to five today, defeating the Davis & Elkins Women’s Senators, 88-51, in Elkins, West Virginia. UDC jumped on Davis & Elkins at the start of the first period and didn’t look back, at one point opening up as much as a 21 point lead . It was Davis & Elkins’ second loss to the Firebirds this season, having fallen to them earlier during the UDC Classic in November.

Lady Firebirds Lend A Helping Hand at Food & Friends
Washington, DC-- The UDC Lady Firebird Women’s Basketball team and coaches volunteered with the Food & Friends community organization in preparation for Thanksgiving this year. Since 1988, Food & Friends, an organization based in the District of Columbia, has been providing counseling, packages, meals, and groceries to residents around the Washington metro area living with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses. These services offer relief for those infected and their families, making a nutritional, balanced lifestyle available, giving them peace of mind.

Washington, DC: November 23, 2008—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds were gracious hostesses this weekend, but didn’t let their genteel hospitality get in the way of the business at hand, as they rose to the occasion and won the 2nd Annual UDC Women’s Basketball Classic this afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. UDC’s sophomore forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) was voted the Most Valuable Player in the Classic, scoring a total of 27 points and grabbing 20 rebounds to lead the Lady Firebirds to the championship.

UDC Lady Firebirds Score First Win of the Season, Defeat East Stroudsburg 69-50
Shippensburg, PA: November 16, 2008—Senior guard LaQuanda Brandon (Washington, DC) and sophomore forward Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) provided the leadership, scoring 14 points apiece, as the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds notched their first win of the season by defeating the East Stroudsburg Lady Warriors, 69-50, in the consolation game of the Shippensburg Classic in Pennsylvania this afternoon. UDC shot 44% (27-62) in two-point field goals, 50% (8-16) beyond the arc and 54% (7-13) from the charity stripe to take the win home.

Shippensburg, PA: November 15, 2008—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds dropped their season opening game to the Shippensburg University Lady Raiders 84-64 this afternoon during the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Forward Lauren Beckley paced the Lady Raiders to the win with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 13-15 free throw shooting.

The UDC Lady Firebirds received 17 votes in the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches’ Poll released on November 5, 2008. The 17 votes is recognition of the potential for the Lady Firebirds to be highly competitive during the 2008-09 season. The Poll is taken weekly through the end of the season.

Lady Firebirds Basketball Team to Tip Off 2008-09 Season November 1
The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds basketball team returns to action for the 2008-2009 season under 5th year head coach and the 2007-08 Independent Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) Coach of the Year Lester L. Butler Jr. The team finished their 2007-2008 season with an Independent School Division II National Championship with an overall record of 21-8. The 21 wins are the most by a Lady Firebirds team in more than 10 years. The Lady Firebirds finished the season ranked in the top 30 in scoring defense, giving up only 57ppg to opponents and scoring over 65ppg.

Hartly, DE: January 29, 2009—The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team is ranked No. 1 among Division II HBCU women's basketball programs in the Heritage Sports Radio HBCU Basketball Power Rankings for the week of January 29, 2009. UDC received the honor after being ranked No. 18 in the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. UDC is 16-2, and is on a ten game win streak. The team is also ranked 5th in the NCAA Atlantic Region.
