Lady Firebirds Top Lady Battlers 74-62

Washington, DC: November 25, 2008—Senior  guard LaQuandra Brandon (Washington, DC) led the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds to a 74-62 win over the visiting Lady Battlers of Alderson-Broaddus College tonight at the Physical Activities Center. Brandon scored 21 points and grabbed 5 rebounds to pace UDC to the win.

Sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) followed with a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds (her fourth of the season), and senior guard DeVaughn Hailey (Camden, NJ) added 14 points. Junior guard Tamara Watkins (Penns Grove, NJ) contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds to the winning effort. This extends the Lady Firebird’s win streak to 4, and gives them a 5-1 season record.

UDC opened an 11 point lead in the first half while shooting 48 percent (13 for 27) from the field, and 88 percent  ( 7 of 8) from the free throw line. The lead changed twice during the half with UDC capitalizing on 6 second chance opportunities for 6 points, to Alderson-Broaddus’ 5 and 5. The Lady Battlers bench outscored the Lady Firebird’s bench 38-20 in a game in which the score was tied only once, which occurred early in the game at the 14:45 mark. UDC went into the break with a 35-26 lead.

The Lady Firebirds led the entire second half, with Alderson-Broaddus only able to cut the deficit to two points with 11:01 remaining in the game. UDC substituted liberally, giving their starters time to rest and the bench some valuable playing time. UDC closed out the game with a 12 point lead, shooting 53 percent for the game (27 of 51) and 82 percent at the charity stripe (18 of 22).

The Lady Firebirds return to action December 6, against Davis & Elkins College in a re-match, in Elkins West Virginia. UDC defeated Davis and Elkins by 20 points last weekend during the UDC Classic.
