UDC Women's Basketball Team Moves Up to #23 in Poll
Washington, DC-- The
University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s
Basketball
Team has moved up to #23 in the most recent USA Today /ESPN
Division II Top Coaches’ Poll, released
on January 13, 2009. The Firebirds are now 13-2 after defeating the
Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs,
55-52, last night at Bowie, Maryland, and now have a seven game win
streak.
Senior guard LaQuanda Brandon (Washington,
DC), who is averaging 13.9 ppg, continues to lead
the Firebirds in scoring followed by sophomore center Lillian
McGill (Sumter, SC) averaging 13.8 ppg.
McGill is ranked 16th in rebounds per game among NCAA DII schools,
averaging 10.9 rpg. She is also
ranked 16th in fi eld-goal percentages, with a completion rate of
57.3 ppg. The third highest scoring member
of the team is senior forward Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ), who
averages 11.3 ppg.
UDC competes as an NCAA Division II
Independent school. The Firebirds won the 2008
Independent Schools Tournament last year and received 17 votes in
the 2008-09 Pre-season USA Today /
ESPN Poll. UDC returns to the hard court on Thursday, January 15,
at 6 p.m., against Elizabeth City State
