UDC Women’s Basketball Tops Elizabeth City State, 80-56

Washington, DC: January 15, 2009—Senior guard LaQuanda Brandon (Washington, DC) led the number 23rd ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team to a, 80-56, win over the Elizabeth City State University Vikings tonight in the Physical Activities Center. Brandon scored 17 points and collected 3 rebounds in leading the team to the victory. UDC is now on an eight game win streak.

UDC had five players in double figures as they dominated every statistical category. Others scoring In double figures in addition to Brandon, were senior guard Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ) with 14 points and 8 rebounds, junior guard Nicole Cooper (Fort Washington, MD) 11 points and 3 assists, sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) with a double double of 10 points and 17 rebounds, and senior guard DeVaughn Hailey (Camden, NJ), who scored 10 points and dished out 5 assists.

UDC led the entire game. They took a, 45-26, lead into locker room at the break, shooting 59 percent (20 for 34) from the field. Their shooting percentages dropped a little during the second half (43%), but they continued to dominate the game finishing with a 24 point advantage over the visiting Vikings.

The Firebirds shot 53 percent (30 for 57) from the field for the game, 46 percent (6 for 13) from beyond the arc, and 74 percent (14 of 19) from the charity stripe. The Vikings only shot 25 percent (17 of 67) from the field, 18 percent from three-point range (2 for 11) and made 65 percent (20 of 31) of their free throws.
Ashley Anderson led the Vikings in scoring with a double double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Two other Vikings scored in double figures; Kearah Jeffreys with 13 points and Briana Glover with 11.

UDC improved their record to 14-2 with this win, while Elizabeth City dropped to 2-11. UDC returns to
Action on January 19, against Philadelphia School of the Sciences in Pennsylvania.
