Lady Firebirds Drop Season Opener , 84-64, to Shippensburg

Shippensburg, PA: November 15, 2008—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds dropped their season opening game to the Shippensburg University Lady Raiders 84-64 this afternoon during the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Forward Lauren Beckley paced the Lady Raiders to the win with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 13-15 free throw shooting.

UDC was led by super sophomore and the Independent Schools 2007 Player of the Year Lillian McGill with a double double of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Shippensburg led 36-25 at the half time break and went on to score 48 points in the second half to take the win.

Shippensburg made 49% of their two –point field goals, 46% of three 3-point shots and 85% from the charity stripe in subduing the Lady Firebirds, who only made 35% of their two point shots.

UDC will see action again on Sunday, November 15, in the second round of the Classic against East Stroudsburg University at 1 p.m. Their home season opener is Wednesday, November 19, against perennial powerhouse California University of Pennsylvania.
