College Park, MD: November 7, 2010- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Basketball Team traveled across town to face the Division I University of Maryland Terrapins, today, in an exhibition contest. It was the first meeting of the teams and Maryland's height advantage quickly took its toll on the visiting Firebirds. Maryland won the game by the score of 121-50.
Sophomore guard Ashley Thompson(English- Camden, NJ) led the Firebird scoring with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal, followed by freshman guard Renita Walker (Electrical Engineering-Norfolk, VA)with 7 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal , and graduate student Niqky Hughes (Public Administration-Fort Worth, TX) with 6 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal.
UDC shot 26 percent (17-66) from the field for the game, 20 percent (6 -29) from beyond the arc, and 59 percent (10-17) from the charity stripe. Maryland shot 61 percent (41-67) from the field, 46 percent (6-13) from three-point range and made 65 percent (33-51) of their free throws. Maryland's bench outscored UDC's 60 to 30.
