PREVIEW: University of the District of Columbia Women's Basketball vs. Mercy
WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team seeks its third straight victory as it hosts East Coast Conference foe Mercy College on Wednesday, January 18th at 5:30 p.m.
The Firebirds (12-3, 3-2 ECC) are coming off back-to-back conference wins against NYIT and Bridgeport, respectively. Having lost senior guard Jamilia Bonner (Mobile, AL - Williamson HS), fellow senior guard Lauren Brittingham (Washington, DC - Potomac HS) has emerged as the team's scoring leader for the last six games. Her three-point shooting has been particularly impressive all year, as she ranks 15th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage with a season average of 44.8-percent. Brittingham was honored as the ECC player of the week on Tuesday, January 17th for her performance last week.
District of Columbia also features senior guard Jasmine Rich (21st in Division II for assists per-game, 5.0) and senior forward Dohnay Banice (8.8 ppg, 8.6 rpg), who has a team-high four double-doubles this season.
The Mavericks (1-13, 1-4 ECC) come into Wednesday night's game with an overall record of 1-13 and a conference mark of 1-4. They are next to last in the ECC standings but recently defeated Queens College last Saturday for their first win of the season. Mercy features the league's leading scorer in 5-foot-9 senior forward Jasmine Williams (18.7 ppg).
