Strength and Conditioning Coaches Morgan Shetler and Kyle Wooden Host “Firebirds Fuel” Seminar
WASHINGTON, DC – Strength and conditioning coaches Morgan Shetler and Kyle Wooden hosted a "Firebirds Fuel" seminar for University of the District of Columbia student-athletes on Friday, April 19th in the gymnasium.
Shetler and Wooden covered several vital topics that apply to student-athletes' overall well-being and success, including: time and stress management, injury prevention and awareness education, nutrition, cost-effective grocery shopping and goal-setting and attainment.
"The purpose of the 'Firebirds Fuel' seminar was just as simple as it sounds: to fuel the athletes," Shetler said. "The student-athlete lifestyle is far from normal, and it is our job as coaches to fuel their minds and bodies to improve academic and athletic performance."
The student-athletes were taught how to effectively read nutritional fact labels and how to portion their meals. They were also provided with a cost-effective shopping list with comparative analysis to eating out three times per day at fast food restaurants such as Chipotle.
The two volunteer intern coaches also spoke to the group at length about how, as student-athletes, they can balance their academics, athletics and personal lives while reducing stress. Shetler and Wooden also covered how to set realistic goals and measure progress toward attaining those goals.
"The athletes have shown great appreciation for the information they were provided, and they are working very hard to apply it to their every day routines," Shetler said. "[Coaches] are a valuable resource, and the more the student-athletes utilize us, the more progress we can help them make."
Wooden added: "Improving lives through exercise, healthy nutrition, and a great mind leads to our student-athletes having the ability to defeat any obstacle and achieve great success."
