Elizabeth City Loses to UDC in Volleyball, 3-1
WASHINGTON, DC: October 6, 2006—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds (9-3) defeated the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings (11-9), 3-1, tonight in Washington. In a closely fought contest, the Lady Firebirds prevailed after Elizabeth City lost the first two games (24-30, 22-30) and forced a fourth game by winning the third game (32-30). UDC won the deciding game (30-19) to put the match in their win column.
The Lady Firebirds were paced by freshman Daniella Bezerra (Sao Paulo, Brazil) with a season high 26 kills, 64 attacks, 1 service ace, 15 digs and a 312 hitting percentage. Freshman Ashonte Pryor (St. Rose, LA) followed with 12 kills, and freshman Laila Benjamin (Houston, TX) contributed 8 kills and 1 service ace. Sophomore Julia da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) provided a season high 50 set assists for the Lady Firebirds.
Sophomore Tanika Hudgins (Rocky Mount, NC) led the Lady Vikings with 22 kills, and 52 attacks, followed by freshman Eva Johnson (Havelock, NC) with 8 kills.
UDC, now 9-3 for the 2006 season will play
their next match on October 10, at 6 p.m., against Virginia Union
University in Richmond, Virginia.
