Washington, DC: September 20, 2010-- After a sluggish start, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team dispatched the Virginia State University Trojans tonight, defeating them, 3-0, at the UDC Sports Complex in Washington, DC. Junior outside hitter Grace Perilli (Economics major-Nashville, TN) led the Firebirds attack tallying a match-high 15 kills, 2 service aces and 9 digs in the process.
The Trojans kept the first set close, getting off to a quick lead , but the Firebirds responded with 9 ties, eventually winning the set 25-21. The second set was not even close, as the Firebirds took a commanding lead and never looked back. UDC led, 21-9, at one point and went on to take the set 25-10. The Trojans jumped out to an early lead at the start of the third set, but the Firebirds responded aggressively tying the score 6 times, and won the set 25-18.
The Firebirds held the Trojans to a total of 21 kills, while pounding 46 for themselves with a .352 hitting percentage to the Trojan's .087. UDC tallied 41 digs to Virginia State's 29, led in assists 37 to 17 and made 46 kills to State's 21.
Sophomore outside hitter Grace DeMichelis (Business major-Aurora, CO) was the second highest scorer tallying 11 kills, 7 service aces, and 8 digs. Karen Trevino (Political Science major-Anthony, NM) a senior middle hitter scored 9 kills, hit 1 service ace and made 5 digs in the contest, while senior setter Joi Upton ( Computer Science major- Baltimore, MD) delivered 36 set assists to her teammates.
UDC improved their record to 8-4 with this win and moves on to host the Trinity University Tigers, at home on Thursday, September 23, at 7 p.m.
