Washington, DC: October 7, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team completed its season sweep of the Goldey Beacom Lightning, defeating them, 3-0, tonight at the UDC Sports Complex in Washington, DC. UDC improved their season record to 15-4, with this win, while Goldey Beacom fell to 4-11.
UDC, playing with only 6 against 9 from Goldey Beacom, set the match on fire as they lived up to their nickname, denying their opponent a single set win as they swept all three sets with scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-17. Junior outside hitter Mirella Nunes (Business-Sao' Paulo, Brazil) led the Firebirds scoring with 16 kills, 2 service aces, 7 digs and 1 block assist. Grace Perilli, a sophomore outside hitter , Political Science major from Aurora, Colorado followed with 10 kills, and 6 digs.
Rebecca Stoffer led the Lightning scoring with 8 kills and 1 dig , while Roni Shaner and Catherine Howard contributed 5 kills apiece in the losing effort.
The Firebirds will travel across town to play Trinity University on October 13, in a re-match. They swept them earlier in the season.
