Women’s Volleyball Receives Major Honors at Athletic Awards Banquet
Washington, DC: April 10, 2010—The University of the District of Columbia Women's Volleyball Team picked up several prestigious awards during the University's Annual Athletic Awards Banquet, Sunday, April 10, at Maggiano's in northwest Washington. Heading the list of award recipients was senior middle hitter Karen Trevino (Political Science- Anthony, New Mexico), who received the Reslyn Woodruff Henley Memorial Award.
The Henley Memorial Award is given annually to a UDC student-athlete who best personifies the attributes embodied by Mr. Henley, for whom the Award is named. Reslyn W. Henley was a graduate of Miner Teacher's College, a UDC predecessor, where he became a superior athlete; especially in football and basketball. He also later served as a basketball coach at Miner and spawned a generation of men who idolized him and wanted to live their lives the way he conducted his.
Trevino served as Treasurer of the UDC Student Government and led the volleyball team to a 20-8 record while ending her career nationally ranked in the top 25 in hitting percentage in the NCAA. University Board of Trustee member and former Henley Award winner Jerome Shelton encouraged all student-athletes to continue on the path to academic and athletic success before presenting a $500 gift to the Department of Athletics on behalf of the Reslyn Woodruff Henley Committee. Trevino also received the team's Most Valuable Player Award.
Receiving the Coaches Award was sophomore outside hitter Vanessa Garley (Business- Rio Rancho, NM). Head Women's Volleyball Coach Sheila Weaver described Vanessa as "the type of player that you can count on. She is a hard worker who leaves it all on the court. Vanessa will be one of our key players next season and I know she will respond to the challenge."
Vanessa ended her season with 183 kills, 115, digs, 13 blocks, 15 block assists and a .404 hitting percentage.
