Oakdale, NY - The UDC Women's Volleyball Team traveled to Dowling College for the first match for the Firebirds in the East Coast Conference (ECC) as well as the first of a three game swing in New York. The Firebirds fell to the Golden Lions in three straight sets 25-11, 25-15, 25-15. The Golden Lions improved to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in ECC play while the Firebirds slide to 4-6, 0-1 in the conference.
UDC was paced by senior outside hitter/ middle hitter Mirella Nunes (Sao' Paulo, Brazil - Colegio Augusto) with 5 kills and Junior libero Grace Perilli (Lewisburg, WV – Independence HS) with 14 digs. Dowling's Bethany Shepard led the match with 11 kills while Chelsea Callahan had 9 kills and 13 digs. Maja Potpara had 31 assists with 11 digs for the Golden Lions.
Dowling took an early lead in the first set and maintained it for the entire set winning 25-11. The second set was even throughout with the Firebirds taking an early lead 11-9. Dowling went on a 10-1 run from that point on, gaining control of the match and ultimately winning 20-12. In the third set, Dowling jumped out to an early lead once again and never looked back, winning 25-15 and closing out the match.
The Firebirds Travel to NYIT on Saturday to take on Franklin Pierce at 12:00 noon and NYIT at 4:00 pm. The NYIT match will be the Firebirds second match in the ECC.
