University of the District of Columbia to Host Firebird Volleyball Classic Friday and Saturday at UDC Gym
WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia will host the Firebird Volleyball Classic on Friday, August 31st and Saturday, September 1st at UDC Gym. The tournament will include six teams and 10 matches.
The first four matches will take place on Friday afternoon from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and the final six will be played the following day from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
The Firebirds will square off against Virginia State in their first match of the 2012 season on Friday at 1 p.m., and later in the day they will play Belmont Abbey at 5 p.m. The next day, they take on Elizabeth City State at 12 p.m. and then play in the tournament's final match at 6 p.m. against Bowie State.
District of Columbia hosted a tournament over Labor Day weekend last year and won three of its four matches, including 3-0 victories over Elizabeth City and Virginia State. The Firebirds would also go on to sweep the two-match series with Bowie State in 2011. This will, however, be the first meeting between University of DC and Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders have won a school-best, 18 matches the last two seasons.
