Washington, DC - The University of the District of Columbia is set to begin its 2011 Women's Cross-Country season on September 10th, at the Delaware State University Invitational in Smyrna, DE. The Firebirds will compete in five meets this season in addition to the East Coast Conference Championships in October in Brookeville, NY. The UDC Athletic Department joined the East Coast Conference (ECC) on July 1, 2011. This will be the Women's Cross Country Team's initial year of competition as a member of the ECC and they are excited about their conference prospects for the season.
The Women's Cross Country Team will be led by senior Kaneesha Hollis (Centreville, MD), who earned team MVP honors in 2010. Head Coach, Alton McKenzie, expects Hollis to be competitive in the conference championships and to provide the team with valuable senior leadership in the 2011 campaign. Other key returners include junior Callister Jones (Fort Washington, MD) and senior Latoya Allen (Washington, DC).
Coach McKenzie is looking to some newcomers to add valuable depth to the team in 2011. Freshmen Kimoy Mais (St. Andrew, Jamaica), Tatyana Commock (Washington, DC), and Shelby Lambert-Chapman (Washington, DC) will look to make an immediate impact for the Firebirds.
Coach McKenzie commented on the women's Cross Country Team, "We are cautiously optimistic about this year's team. We are hopeful that we can build and improve on last year with some of our returners, while at the same time develop and incorporate some of our youth. We are excited to compete in the East Coast Conference, and we hope to be legitimate contenders in the ECC at the end of the season."
