Lady Firebirds Open 2007 Season by Sweeping Lady Trojans

Washington, DC—The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds opened their 2007 season by sweeping the Virginia State University Lady Trojans 3-0 at home tonight. Junior outside hitter Jana Hoerner (Germany) led the Lady Firebirds with seven kills, twenty-four attacks and three service aces. Junior transfer Anne Sanchez (Orlando, FL) followed with six kills, eighteen attacks and six service aces.

Laila Benjamin, a sophomore middle hitter (Houston, TX), and freshman middle hitter Karen Trevino (Anthony, NM) each made five kills, followed by junior transfer Janea Burt (Lexington Park, MD) with four kills. Freshman setter Carmen Smith (Houston, TX) gave twenty-one assists in the effort.

UDC took command of the match early and never looked back as they won with scores of 29-18, 30-28, and 30-26. The Lady Firebirds will see their next action on Saturday, September 1, when they host the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University in the Physical Activities Center at 2 p.m.
