UDC Inks Two New Volleyball Players

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics of the University of the District of Columbia announces the signing of two additional new volleyball players for the 2007 season. Athletics Director Dr. Harold M. Merritt said, “I am pleased to announce that Marette Kiernan and Anne Sanchez will join the UDC family as members of our women’s volleyball team this year. These young ladies were standout players at their previous schools and will bring new talent and enthusiasm to our program. We welcome them and excitedly look forward to the contributions they will make to UDC volleyball.”

Kiernan comes to UDC from Florida Community College in Jacksonville, Florida, where she played for two years as a middle blocker, and was named to the All-Conference 2nd Team in 2005. A native of Gladstone, Australia, she played on several junior and national club teams as a youth and in high school. She is a graduate of Gladstone State High School.
 
An outstanding middle blocker with great quickness and strength, she excelled as a middle blocker in 2005, in spite of suffering a stress fracture injury. She played in 34 games in the 2006 season and made important contributions in each win.

Her freshman year stats were: GP -109, Kills -213, K/G-1.95, K%-.262, Aces-4, Digs-8 and Blocks-106. During her sophomore year her stats were: GP-34, Kills-33, K/G-2.06, K%-.287, and Blocks-34.
 
Anne Sanchez joins the UDC Volleyball Team after playing two years at St. John’s River Community College in Palatka, Florida. Sanchez is a native of Orlando, Florida and a graduate of Freedom High School. She played as an outside hitter at St. John’s River, where she received honors including being named to the FCCAA All-State Team and the FCCAA All-Conference 1st Team in 2006.
 
During her playing career at St. John’s, the Lady Vikings volleyball team placed 3rd in their district at the FCCAA State Volleyball Tournament, and defeated their conference rival Florida Community College- Jacksonville for the first time in Viking history. Her 2006 stats were: GP-78, Kills-263, K/G-3.372, K%-.263, Aces- 28, Hitting%-21.96, and Blocks-26.
