Firebirds Fall in 3 to Seahawks
Washington, DC- October 16, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team put up a good fight as they fell to the St. Mary's College Seahawks, 3-0, today, at the UDC Sports Complex in Washington, DC. Sophomore outside hitter Grace Perilli (Economics- Nashville, TN) led the Firebirds effort with 6 kills, 2 service aces and 3 digs.
Set scores were 25-13, 25-20 and 25-11. The Firebirds rallied in the second set, scoring 8 unanswered points as they came to within 4 points of tying the score. But the Seahawks held on to secure the win and pressed ahead to take the third set and the game. Gena Hlavinka paced the Seahawks to the win with 9 kills, followed by Claire Kodan with 7.
Sophomore outside hitter Vanessa Garley(Business-Sao' Paulo, Brazil) and junior outside hitter Grace DeMichelis (Political Science-Aurora, CO) added 5 kills apiece to the effort. DeMichelis also delivered 18 set assists . Senior middle hitter Karen Trevino (Political Science-Anthony, NM) followed with 4 kills, while senior setter Carmen Smith (Nursing-Houston, TX brought up 10 digs.
The Firebirds slipped to 15-5, with this loss, while the Seahawks improved to 16-5. UDC moves on to play in the College of Notre Dame (MD) Tournament, October 23, in Baltimore, MD. They return home for Senior Night festivities on October 28, hosting across town rival Bowie State University.
