WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team came up just short in a tightly contested matchup, falling 80–79 in overtime to Cheyney University on Saturday afternoon at the UDC Sports Complex.
UDC built momentum early, taking a 39–37 lead at halftime, and continued to battle throughout the second half as the game remained close down the stretch. The Firebirds forced overtime after a strong defensive stand late in regulation but were unable to convert in the final seconds of the extra period.
Rejuan Gray led the Firebirds with 16 points and 10 rebounds, recording a double-double while adding four assists and two blocks. Ty Williams followed with 15 points, while Oliver Spence contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.
Off the bench, Arthur Roache provided a strong spark, scoring 14 points and knocking down two three-pointers in 34 minutes of action. Kevon Corley added nine points, including 7-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line, and Darnell Dantzler contributed five points, five rebounds, and four assists.
The matchup marked the Firebirds' final non-conference game of the season. UDC will now turn its attention to East Coast Conference play, traveling upstate New York for a two-game road swing. The Firebirds will face Daemen on Friday, followed by D'Youville on Sunday.
