WASHINGTON, DC – Senior men's lacrosse student-athlete Benjamin Taylor and the Brothers of Theta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Incorporated collected 800 articles of clothing and toiletries, altogether weighing just under 500 lbs. and raised $150 for the purchasing of diapers, all of which were donated to the DC General Emergency Family Shelter on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 19th.

Upon delivering the articles to the shelter, Taylor and the Brothers read various books to children in one of the multi-purpose rooms while the parents sorted through the items to pick out what they needed.

"We set up a reading corner in which the children gathered around, and we read various children's books such as Curious George, Where the Wild Things Are, and Owl Moon," Taylor, who joined the fraternity this Fall, said. "The event was extremely successful, and we hope to be able to work with the DC General Emergency Family Shelter in the future."

The fraternity collected items for one week, beginning on Monday, January 12th, setting up a booth inside Building 38 on UDC's campus and handing out free coffee and doughnuts to students passing by. The group also partnered with the local Starbucks on Connecticut Ave., and put a collection box in the store so members of the community could donate as well.
