District of Columbia Suffers Tough Loss to Georgetown, 0-7

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team traveled to take on Georgetown, where they lost by a score of 0-7.  The loss drops the Firebirds to 5-2 on the season, with both losses coming against Division I opponents.

In the first doubles match, senior Aleksandar Grabovac (Psychology – Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Euro Sola Ljubljana) and sophomore Simon Andersson (Business Management – Ystad, Sweden/Sydskanska Gymnasiet) fell 8-1 to Charlie Caris and Casey Distaso of Georgetown.  The No. 3 doubles match saw junior Carlos Quiroga (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Maria Montessori) and freshman Simon Bratke (Undecided – Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) lose a close match to Daniel Khanin and Reese Milner, 8-5.  The doubles team of junior Miguel Uzcategui (Electrical Engineering – Valencia, Venezuela/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and junior Ike Kiro (Undecided – Milnerton Ridge, South Africa/Milnerton HS) defeated Alex Tropiano and Shane Korber by an 8-5 mark.  However, with Georgetown winning two of the three matches, they took the one available doubles point.

In singles play, Bratke fell 6-1, 6-1 to Tropiano.  In the No. 1 singles match, two-time ECC Player of the Week Grabovac dropped a 6-0, 6-3 match to Khanin.  Andersson fell to a 6-2, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Korber.  Quiroga also lost his match against Distaso, 6-4, 6-3.

The Firebirds didn't go out without a fight, as was seen in their last two singles matches.  Kiro played a very close match with Caris, ultimately falling 6-1, 4-6, 10-5.  After taking the first game, Uzcategui dropped the next two in what was arguably the closest match of the day, ending in a loss to Milner, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8.

District of Columbia will be back in action at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29 as they take on Roberts Wesleyan at home.
