Firebirds Earn Two Singles Wins in Hard-Fought Battle Against St. Thomas Aquinas
Sparkill, NY – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team showed resilience and grit on the road against East Coast Conference powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas College, earning two singles victories in a 5-2 setback on Saturday.
Despite dropping the doubles point with losses on all three courts, the Firebirds bounced back with competitive play in singles action. Sebastiano Palma and Ghali Ouajahat Filali delivered standout performances to secure UDC's two points on the day.
Palma was dominant at No. 6 singles, defeating Alberto Espinosa Navarro in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 5 spot, Filali showed tremendous perseverance, rallying after a tough first set to edge Henry Ronnberg in a thrilling match tiebreaker, 0-6, 7-6(2), 1-0(10).
Senior Louka Queguiner nearly pulled off another win for UDC at No. 2 singles, battling through three intense sets before falling in a close tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5).
