UDC Runners Break Course Records at VSU Series

Ettrick, VA: September 29, 2007—Sophomore James Kichwen (Kapsabet, Kenya) broke the course record today while competing in the Virginia State University Series Meet, which was previously set by UDC sophomore Wilfred Chemallan last year. Kichwen finished in a record 25:51.00 minutes on the way to a first place finish in the Men’s 8K Run.

Meanwhile, freshman Stella Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya) was on her way to a new course record in the Women’s 5K Run, as she finished in first place. Sang broke the course record by more than a minute as she finished in 18:28.00.

Coach Marc J. Harrison said, “It’s a real joy to watch them run. Their true test, however, will come this weekend when they compete in the Norfolk State University Invitational in Norfolk, Virginia. There they will face tough competition from top MEAC (DI) and CIAA (DII) schools.”

Irene Rono, another freshman from Kapsabet, Kenya ran a personal best finishing second in 20:11.00 minutes. “Sang and Rono are working very well together, “ said Coach Harrison. “Their teammates who are primarily sprinters and jumpers are enjoying themselves too, and developing one team ego,” Harrison said
