UDC Falls to Davis and Elkins in Tough Season Opener Matchup

ELKINS, W.Va. — Dist. Columbia fell to Davis and Elkins 20-2 on Saturday at Nuttall Field. Davis and Elkins improved its record to 3-0, while UDC dropped to 0-2.

The first quarter began with Davis and Elkins taking control early as Morgan Rogers scored the opening goal at 14:46 with an assist from Alexia Gonzales. Malia Galan extended the lead at 13:12, assisted by Zoe Mackey, and Rogers added another goal at 10:45, with Ke'ya Stevens assisting. Davis and Elkins continued to dominate, as Galan scored again at 10:34, followed by Emelia Johnson capitalizing on a free position shot at 7:46. Talia Berardo added to the tally with a goal at 3:09, assisted by Galan, and Rylee Anderson closed out the scoring with a goal at 1:34, assisted by Stevens. By the end of the first quarter, Davis and Elkins led 7-0 over the Firebirds.

Davis and Elkins extended its lead in the second quarter with a strong offensive performance, securing four additional goals. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring at 8:34 with a man-down goal, assisted by Malia Galan. Izzie Sevila added another goal at 6:16, followed by Ke'ya Stevens scoring off an assist from Rogers at 5:19. Talia Berardo capped the scoring with a man-down goal with just 37 seconds remaining. UDC struggled to capitalize on its opportunities, with several turnovers and missed shots, allowing Davis and Elkins to close the quarter leading 11-0.

Davis and Elkins extended their lead with a strong performance in the third quarter, scoring five goals. Rylee Anderson contributed significantly, scoring twice, with assists from Talia Berardo and Savannah Quave. Quave also added two goals, both assisted by Anderson. Tamaya Edwards put the Firebirds on the board with a goal at 5:03, assisted by Jada Williams. Emma Rapp secured the final goal of the quarter for Davis and Elkins with 45 seconds remaining, closing the quarter at 16-1 in favor of the home team.

In the fourth quarter, Keliah Tucker scored for UDC at 13:28, narrowing the gap slightly. However, Davis and Elkins responded with a strong offensive display. Darby Thomson equalized at 10:07, followed by Savannah Quave's goal, assisted by Diana Gutierrez, at 4:58. Izzie Sevila found the net at 3:51, and Ke'ya Stevens extended the lead with a goal assisted by Sevila at 0:35. Shannen Graham made multiple saves for the Firebirds, but Davis and Elkins maintained control and secured a decisive victory.

The Firebirds are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Chestnut Hill for a 1:00pm start time.
