Firebird Singles Players and Doubles Team Fall in Day 2 of ITA East Regional
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Junior Jessica Nunez won her round of 16 match but fell in the quarterfinal round of the Women's A singles bracket as the University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team competed in Day 2 of the ITA East Regional Championship in Philadelphia. Also, junior Sofia Leon fell in the second round of the Women's B singles draw and junior Tadai Abilla and Leon dropped their round of 16 match in the B doubles draw.
Nunez (Electrical Engineering – Guayaquil, Ecuador/American School of Guayaquil) first earned an impressive, 6-1, 6-2 win over Queens' Francesca Fanchin in the round of 16, but was then defeated in the quarterfinals by last year's ITA East Region Rookie of the Year, Stephanie Puentes-Robinson (Goldey-Beacom College) by a count of 6-4, 6-2.
Leon battled in round two of the Women's B singles draw, but she was bested by Adelphi's Bianca Posa, 8-4. Leon also teamed up with Abilla (TV Production – Galloway, NJ/Absegami HS) for an 8-4 doubles loss to a pair from Southern Connecticut in the round of 16.
This concludes play for the Firebirds in this year's ITA East Regional.
