Franco and Brienza Sweep ECC Women’s Tennis Weekly Honors
BABYLON, N.Y. – Mariona Franco and Valentina Brienza swept the ECC Women's Tennis Weekly Awards earning Player and Rookie of the Week honors, for their performances over the weekend.
UDC opened conference play this past weekend with wins against St Thomas Aquinas and Queens College. The Firebirds are now 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in ECC play.
Franco went 1-1 in doubles play and 2-0 in singles play at No. 2. She clinched the winning point for UDC in their 5-2 victory over STAC defeating Viktoriia Pavlovets 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. She then went on to team up with Claudia Bahamon to defeat Gabriela Sciarotta and Chole Certain from Queens, 6-3 in doubles play. She completed the day undefeated with another win against Nathalie Ulander at No. 2.
Brienza went undefeated on the weekend winning both of her singles matches at No.6. She defeated Giovanna Jallas from STAC 6-6, 6-2 and then went on to defeat Mana Koitabashi to take home the win for the Firebirds. This win against Queens was the first time in the program's history that a UDC team has beaten the Knights.
Vitor Gomes also made the Honor Roll for scoring the game-winning goal for the Firebirds in a 1-0 OT win against Daemen College. This is the second time this season that Vitor has scored the game-winning goal in an OT victory for UDC. UDC is now 3-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Conference.
UDC Women's Tennis will take a break this week but will host their first home game on Saturday, October 9th at 1:00 pm. Men's Soccer is back in action, as they head to Staten Island to face off against CSI on Wednesday, September 29 at 3:30 pm.
