Firebirds Defeat Knights; Clinch No.2 Seed in ECC Tournament

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's tennis team defeated Queens College 4-3 to secure the No.2 seed in the ECC Tournament in Flushing, N.Y. next week. The Firebirds close out the regular season with a 6-2, 4-1 ECC record and the Knights end with a 4-2, 3-2 ECC record.

With a split decision at No.2 and 1, the doubles point came down to the No.3 spot. The duo of Mariona Franco and Claudia Bahamon fought hard but eventually fell 6(6)-7 to give Queens the 1-0 lead going into singles.  

Laura Marie evened out the score after a win at No.3 and was followed by Sofia Bellucco and doubles partner Célia Bastin at No.5 and 4 to give UDC the 3-1 lead. 

But the Knights wouldn't go quietly as they picked up the win at No.2. Simoné Pärn would then clinch the match at the  No.1 position defeating the reigning ECC preseason Player of the Year Maja Makal in a three set match up.

UDC (6-2, 4-1 ECC) will compete in the ECC Tournament next week. More details to follow.
