Firebirds Rally for 5-2 Road Victory Over West Chester
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team secured a strong 5-2 road victory over West Chester University in non-conference action.
After dropping the doubles point, the Firebirds responded in dominant fashion in singles play, winning five of six matches to clinch the team victory.
The duo of Lina Benjelloun and Sofiia Shaparenko picked up the lone doubles win for UDC with a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 position.
UDC's momentum carried into singles play, where the Firebirds showcased resilience and depth across the lineup. At the top spot, Polina Zelentsova battled back after dropping the first set to earn a gritty 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 victory at No. 1.
Célia Bastin followed with a hard-fought three-set win at No. 2, defeating Ashleigh Grooms 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5). Lina Benjelloun added another comeback victory at No. 3, topping Brigitte Gravelle 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3).
Sofiia Shaparenko delivered a strong straight-set performance at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-4 win, while Nadja Zmukic dominated at No. 5, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory to seal the match for the Firebirds.
The Firebirds close out conference play with a two-match road trip, traveling to face D'Youville on Friday before taking on Daemen on Saturday.
