Areial Clark a Double Winner At Christopher Newport University Blue & Silver Challenge

April 16, 2011: Newport News, VA - The UDC Women's Outdoor Track & Field team made significant strides at the CNU Blue and Silver meet despite high winds and inclement weather that blasted the South over the weekend. Freshman Areial Clark (Criminal Justice Major-Kennesaw,GA) claimed victories in the women's Shot Put with a distance of 11.94m  and in the Javelin with a personal best of 29.64m.

The UDC High Jumpers got the meet started on a high note with Senior Dicoda Waugh (Business Major-Kingston,Jamaica) clearing 1.58M for 2nd and Junior Stacy Griffith (Architecture Major-Fredricksburg,VA) and Freshman Shauna Kay Creary (Business Mgnt. Major-Kingston,Jamaica)  tying for 4th clearing 1.48m.

The Firebirds took 2nd through 4th place in the 200M race. Senior Saleena Green (Marketing Major-Kingston,Jamaica) had the runner up spot followed by Junior Latoya Allen (Social Work Major-Washington,DC) 3rd and Senior Erica Nixon (Health Ed Major-Bronx,NY) 4th. Green and Nixon teamed with Freshman Shemeia Barnes (Criminal Justice Major-Forrestville,MD) and Freshman Jasmine Smith (Architecture-Baltimore,MD) for 2nd in the 4x100M.

Junior Kaneesha Hollis (Criminal Justice Major-Centreville,MD) and Sophomore Callister Jones (Marketing Major-Ft.Washington,MD) fought through tough weather conditions to finish 3rd and 4th respectively in the 400M.

Coach Alton McKenzie commented on the Challenge: "With the very high winds, times and distances  become less significant and you focus on competing for victories. I think we did that on Saturday."

The next competition for UDC will be the Morgan State University Legacy Meet, April 23rd in Baltimore, MD. The Firebird women will then compete at the prestigious Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia,PA, April 28-30.
