Goldey-Beacom Defeats UDC, 3-0, In Volleyball
Washington, DC: September 19, 2009—Freshman Monica Dempsey led the Godey-Beacon College Lightning to a, 3-0, win over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds in volleyball this afternoon at the UDC Sports Complex. Dempsey tallied 10 kills, 7 service aces and 12 assists in the match.
Goldey-Beacom took all three sets with scores of 25-11, 25-18
and 25-19. UDC made a run in the third set and appeared to be on
their way to a win before falling to the Lightning.
Graduate student Kelly Nolan and senior Chalea Johnson added 7
kills apiece to round out the leading scorers for Goldey-Beacom.
Sophomore Roni Shaner made 16 assists in the winning effort.
Junior middle hitter Karen Trevino (Anthony, N M) led the Firebirds with a match high 14 kills and 5 digs, while junior outside hitter Ashley Jefferson(Manvel, TX) contributed 8 kills, 1 assist and 6 digs. Junior outside hitter Carmen Smith (Houston, TX) added 4 kills and 5 digs to the effort. Junior setter Joi Upton (Baltimore, MD) made a match high 21 assists.
UDC will return to the court on Tuesday, September 22, when they travel to nearby Bowie, Maryland to face the Bowie State University Bulldogs, at 7 p.m.
