UDC Volleyball Sweeps St. Paul's and Livingstone, 3-0, to Win LivingstoneTournament

Livingstone, NC: September 4, 2010-- With three players tallying double digits in matches against St. Paul's and Livingstone Colleges on Saturday, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team captured the Livingstone Tournament Championship by sweeping both teams,

3-0, for the title. Grace Perilli (business major-Thompson Station, TN) , Karen Trevino (political science major-Anthony, NM) and Vanessa Garley (business major-Rio Rancho, NM) provided the scoring leadership for the Firebirds.

Perilli, a junior outside hitter, made 16 kills in the two matches, while Trevino, a senior middle hitter, tallied 19 kills and Garley, also junior outside hitter, added 17 for the Tournament victory. The three scored a combined 17 kills in the opening round on Friday against Spelman College to propel the team on to the next two wins.

Head Coach Sheila Weaver, on winning the Tournament, said, "I consider this a milestone for the program.  It is the first time we have won a tournament and to sweep every team made the victory even sweeter.    The Firebirds played with composure combining excellent passing, with precision serving and exceptional defense.  It was obvious that the Lady Firebirds controlled the tempo of the game and outplayed their opponents."

The 4-0 Firebirds will see action again on Tuesday, September 7, at home against the Catholic University Cardinals, at 7 p.m.
