UDC Women’s Volleyball Defeats Virginia Union 3-0
Washington, DC - The UDC Women's Volleyball Team dominated tonight, disposing of Virginia Union in three straight sets. With the win the Firebirds advance to 9-14 on the year while the Panthers drop to 6-16 on the year. This was the second time the Firebirds and Panthers have met this year, with the Firebirds winning the first matchup 3-0 on September 29th in Richmond, VA.
The first set was all Firebirds as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back winning 25-16. The second set saw more of the same as the Firebirds jumped all over the Panthers and came out on top 25-14. Virginia Union showed some fight in the third set, taking an early 5-4 lead, but the Firebirds regained control from there and closed out the set 25-14.
The Firebirds saw impressive performances from junior outside hitter/ middle back Vanessa Garley (Rio Rancho, NM - Rio Rancho HS) with 8 kills, freshman middle hitter Ariana Scott (Lakewood, CA - Mayfair HS) with 8 kills, and freshman setter Kamene Rose (Chula Vista, CA – Hilltop HS)with 24 assists and 8 digs. Senior outside hitter/ middle hitter Mirella Nunes (Sao' Paulo, Brazil - Colegio Augusto) had 4 kills, 7 serve aces, and 5 digs. Freshman middle hitter Sonas Angel (Oceanside, CA - Oceanside HS) had 7 kills, 3 serve aces, and 4 digs. Junior libero Grace Perilli (Lewisburg, WV – Independence HS) had 8 digs on the day. The Firebirds saw four freshman play significant minutes and make major contributions today.
The Firebirds have a big weekend ahead as they take on two East Coast Conference opponents on the road. On Saturday they take on Molloy College at 6:00 pm, and on Sunday they take on CW Post at 2:00 pm.
