Strong First Half Overshadowed by Second-Half Turnovers as Firebirds Fall to Wilmington
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team opened the 2025–26 season at home on Friday night, showing early promise before a difficult second half shifted momentum, resulting in a 93–73 loss to Wilmington (Del.) in the ECC/CACC Conference Challenge at the E.B. Henderson Sports Complex.
The Firebirds controlled the first half, shooting a blazing 56.4 percent from the field and sharing the ball effectively with 13 assists, helping them build a 43–36 halftime lead. However, Wilmington capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities in the second half, outscoring UDC 57–30 to take the win.
Michael Harrell led the Firebirds with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting, adding 2 assists and a steal in 23 minutes. Arthur Roache followed with 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Karris Scott posted 8 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds.
Chris Smith contributed 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals, and Oliver Spence came off the bench to add 8 points and a team-high 9 rebounds, giving the Firebirds valuable interior production.
Despite UDC's efficient shooting (31-of-55), Wilmington's pressure defense and transition game created separation. The Wildcats also connected on 10 three-pointers and held a 40–32 rebounding edge.
Wilmington was led by Jaiden Guy, who compiled a game-high 30 points on 13-of-19 shooting, while Jaylin Horsey added 17 points and Tre Hawkins scored 13.
UDC continues ECC/CACC Challenge play tomorrow at the E.B. Henderson Sports Complex, with a match up against Goldey-Beacom.
