Ellis Knocks Down Four Three Pointers in Firebirds Close Victory over the Marauders

WASHINGTON DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team picked up their third win of the season, after defeating Millersville College 61-56, Friday evening at the UDC Gymnasium. The Firebirds improved to 3-1 on the season and the Marauders fell to 1-3.

Halia Ellis led all scorers with 22 points going a perfect 4-4 from behind the arc, 5-5 from the field, and 8-9 from the foul line. Teammate Latavia Jackson had 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

The Firebirds outshot the Marauders 17-12 in the first quarter with Aiyana Ellis leading the way with five points. UDC was able to keep Millersville scoreless for the first four minutes of the second quarter while extending the lead to nine points. That lead was short-lived as the Marauders made it a three-point game after their leading scorer Lauren Lister knocked down a free throw.

The third quarter was the best offensively for both sides with Millersville edging out the Firebirds 23-20. Halia led the way knocking down all four of her three-pointers and putting up 14 points.

The fourth quarter was a nail-biter as the victory was up for grabs on both sides down to the last second. With 44 seconds to go, it was a two-point game, which Jackson extended to three after a made free throw. Lister then made a three-point play getting fouled going for a made layup, with just 19 seconds to go. A miss from Lister followed up by four back-to-back made free throws by Halia gave the Firebirds the edge and secured the victory for UDC.

Next up UDC (3-1) will head to Pennsylvania to face off against Indiana University this Sunday with a tip-off time of 4:00 pm.
