UDC Hosts Successful "Youth Day" Event; Women's Volleyball Drops 3-0 Match to NYIT

Washington, DC – Following a very successful "Youth Day" event on Saturday, October 8, the UDC Women's Volleyball team returned to action at the UDC Gym to face a tough NYIT squad which was looking to extend its winning streak to eleven consecutive games.

After a sluggish first set, the Firebirds clawed back in the final two sets but were ultimately outlasted by NYIT, 3-0.  In the first set, NYIT and its best player, Shelby Cable, quickly dispatched the Firebirds with a score of 25-14.

The second set featured more back-and-forth between the two teams, as the Firebirds took an early 10-9 lead.  However, the Firebirds were unable to sustain the momentum as NYIT stormed back, finishing off the set 25-21.

Down two sets to none, the Firebirds put up an admirable effort in the third set but unfortunately came up short as NYIT finished the set with a score of 25-20.

Juniors Vanessa Garley and Grace Perilli led the Firebirds throughout the match. Garley recorded a team-high 12 kills while Perilli led the team with 13 total digs.  Senior Grace DeMichelis was also a leading contributor for the Firebirds as she compiled a team-high 17 assists and 7 digs for the Firebirds.

Looking to bounce back, the Firebirds will resume action next Thursday, October 13th, as they take on Virginia Union at home in the UDC Volleyball Gym.
