UDC Drops Tight 4–3 Decision to Coppin State in Spring Opener
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of the District of Columbia men's tennis team came up just short in its spring opener, falling 4–3 to Coppin State University in a closely contested dual match.
The Firebirds struck first by capturing the doubles point. Sebastiano Palma and Elouan Queguiner set the tone at No. 1 doubles with a dominant 6–1 victory. Filippo Vatteroni and Ambrose Evamy followed with a clutch 7–6(2) win at No. 2 doubles to secure the early advantage for UDC.
Carrying a 1–0 lead into singles play, the Firebirds extended their edge behind strong performances at the top of the lineup. Palma earned a gritty three-set win at No. 1 singles, defeating Rishi Jalota 6–3, 3–6, 6–2. Queguiner delivered one of the day's most decisive results at No. 2 singles, cruising to a 6–2, 6–0 victory.
Coppin State responded by claiming the remaining singles courts, including a tightly contested match at No. 3 singles that featured a second-set tiebreak. The Eagles ultimately secured four singles victories to edge UDC by a single point.
Despite the final result, the Firebirds showed strength at the top of the lineup and competitiveness throughout the match in their first outing of the spring season.
