UDC Athletes Feted at Banquet
The UDC Department of Intercollegiate Athletics feted its student-athletes at a yearend banquet on Saturday, May 1, honoring them for their contributions to the University’s athletic program during the 2009-10 academic year. Seventy-one student-athletes were cited for their athletic achievements.
Seven student-athletes received the “Most Valuable Player Award” for their outstanding contribution to their sport. MVP recipients were: Men’s Cross-Country- Linus Kosgei, Women’s Cross-Country- Kaneesha Hollis, Women’s Basketball- Lillian McGill, Men’s Basketball- Kenneth James, Women’s Volleyball- Karen Trevino, Women’s Tennis- Karen Trevino, Women’s Tennis- Shakira Watford, Men’s Tennis- Tomas Gajdusek.
Receiving the Coach’s Award were: Men’s Cross-Country- Peter Rotich, Women’s CrossCountry- Callister Jones, Women’s Indoor Track- Erica Nixon,Women’s Outdoor Track- Callister Jones
Women’s Outdoor Track-Demia Franklin, Women’s Basketball- Nicole Cooper,Men’s Soccer- Mario Banegas, Men’s Basketball- Purvis Rollins, Women’s Volleyball- Carmen Smith,Women’s Tennis- Chantel Henry, Men’s Tennis- Daniel Gourdine.
Seven student-athletes were cited as the “Most Improved” in their sport. They were:Women’s Indoor Track- Dicoda Waugh, Women’s Outdoor Track- Saleena Waugh, Women’s Basketball- Jasmine Rich, Men’s Soccer- Isiah Munoz, Men’s Basketball- Keith Brooks.
The Reslyn W. Henley Memorial Award was presented to three student-athletes for years 2008, 2009 and 2010. Receiving the 2008 Award was Robin Williams, a 2008 graduate and former member of the women’s basketball team. The 2009 recipient was Erica Nixon, a member of the women’s indoor/outdoor track & field team, and receiving the award for 2010 was Nicole Cooper. The Reslyn W. Henley Memorial Award is given annually in memory of Reslyn W. Henley, who was a graduate and former student-athlete of the Miner Teachers College, which was a precursor of the University of the District of Columbia. The Awards were presented by Barry Contie, President of the Henley Award Committee, and Len Henley, Reslyn’s nephew.
